Russell E. Train Fellowship 2023: Enhancing Capacity for Current and Aspiring University Faculty (up to $30,000)

The WWF Russell E. Train Education for Nature Programme (EFN) supports current and aspiring faculty members to pursue PhD degrees locally, regionally, or internationally in order to enhance local capacity in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Asia.

The goal of this competitive fellowship is to advance the creation of a critical mass of exceptional and highly skilled professionals, natural and social scientists, and practitioners who will continue to deepen their knowledge, conduct more research, and engage in leadership and conservation science.

Focus Areas

The WWF Russell E. Train Education for Nature Programme (EFN) supports current and aspiring faculty members to pursue PhD degrees locally, regionally, or internationally in order to enhance local capacity in Asia, Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Asia.

The goal of this competitive fellowship is to advance the creation of a critical mass of exceptional and highly skilled professionals, natural and social scientists, and practitioners who will continue to deepen their knowledge, conduct more research, and engage in leadership and conservation science.

To develop locally led evidence-based, innovative, and interdisciplinary research, the types of proposals WWF is open to may cover for following areas/themes, but examples are not limited to this list:

  • Focus on conservation of biodiversity and habitats.
  • Focus on why the proposed work is needed at local, national, and regional level.
  • Emphasis on gender dimensions, equity, and inclusion.
  • Build on partnership and active engagement with local communities, academic, research and practitioners.
  • Consider human dimensions in conservation: community-based conservation and science, emphasize on enhancing local expertise, skills and knowledge.

Funding

  • Applicants may apply for up to two years of funding and request up to $30,000 per year. The amount of funding will vary.

Eligibility

  • You must be a citizen and legal permanent resident of an eligible country.
  • You must have at least two years of conservation-related work or research experience.
  • You must have an existing affiliation with a college or university in an eligible country and demonstrate collaboration and strategic partnership with country and/or regional institutions. Priority will be given to individuals affiliated with underserved universities.
  • You must have a demonstrated commitment to working in academia in an eligible country; Commitment to providing targeted mentorship and guidance to early career conservation leaders and scientists.
  • You must be enrolled in or admitted to a PhD programme anywhere in the world.
  • You must plan to begin your studies no later than January 2024.
  • You must contact EFN if you are a WWF employee, consultant, or previous EFN grant recipient to determine eligibility.
  • You must submit all required documents by the application deadline (February 1, 2023).
