The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2023

The oldest foreign literary contest in existence is the Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition. It was founded in 1883, and it will be 140 years old in 2023. It is an essential method to recognize accomplishment, elevate youth voices, and build critical writing skills, and thousands of young people participate each year.

Details: Commonwealth Heads of Government proclaimed 2023 a year devoted to youth-led action for sustainable and equitable development and asked for a revival and reinforcement of our dedication to youth involvement and empowerment to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the Commonwealth Youth Programme.

60% of the nearly 2.5 billion individuals who make up the Commonwealth are under the age of 30. A dynamic “youth force for change” comprised of exceptional young people who are taking more initiative in lobbying, decision-making, and action, this young group symbolizes this. The Queen’s Commonwealth Essay Competition 2023 challenges participants to examine the influence that young people have within the international community and to think about how this influence might be used to have a significant global effect.

SENIOR CATEGORY ((born between 1 July 2004 and 30 June 2009) 14-18 years of age)

  1. As Head of the Commonwealth His Majesty The King is opening an international conference on the importance of young people in decision making. Write his speech.
  2. Does age matter?
  3. The 2023 Year of Youth was a moment of significant social change – what was its impact on the world?
  4. Script a dialogue between two people, with contrasting viewpoints, on an issue that divides generations.

JUNIOR CATEGORY ((born on or after 1 July 2009) under 14 years of age)

  1. In fiction and throughout history, young people have performed numerous acts of heroism. Choose your favourite young hero and write to them about why you admire them.
  2. What is your youthful superpower, and how can it make a positive difference to the world?
  3. You have been stranded on a planet where everyone is 18 or under. Journal your experience.
  4. Why does your voice matter?

Benefits:

  • The top two winners from each category will be awarded with a to London AWARDS trip
  • All successful entries will receive for a week of educational and cultural events, culminating in a special palace.

Awards:

  • All successful entries will receive Certificate of Participation and a number of entrants will receive Gold, Silver and Bronze Awards for excellence in writing.
