The Nile Basin Intiative Nile Media Awards 2023

The much awaited Nile Media Awards 2023 have officially begun, thanks to generous assistance from GIZ on behalf of the German Federal Government. Journalists are cordially encouraged to take part in this renowned event by submitting their original works that highlight and promote Cooperation in Transboundary Waters within the Nile Basin.

Journalists are urged to concentrate on a range of subjects that highlight how many nations work together to address common difficulties as part of the submission criteria.

These subjects include, but are not limited to, methods for reducing climate change, maximizing the socioeconomic gains from the Nile Basin’s shared water resources, efficient management strategies for lowering the risks and expenses associated with development projects, and the critical role that cooperation plays in maintaining regional peace and security while managing and using the Nile Basin’s shared water resources.

The Nile Media Awards 2023 seek to honor and acknowledge outstanding reporting that highlights the value of collaboration across Nile Basin nations. The program hopes to increase awareness, encourage cooperation, and spark positive change in the area by bringing these important issues to light.

Journalists are encouraged to submit their compelling pieces, which exemplify the value of cooperative management and sustainable use of the Nile Basin’s water resources, ultimately contributing to the prosperity and well-being of the entire Nile Basin community. The organizers anticipate a wealth of insightful and impactful submissions that will undoubtedly serve as catalysts for progress and understanding in the region.

The Nile Media Awards organised by NBI, is a competition for journalists based in the NBI Member States. Journalists are encouraged to explore the benefits of cooperation in the Nile Basin on various topics/sectors, including food, water and energy security, climate adaptation, ecosystems, governance and management of water resources, regional investment projects and many more. Submissions with a strong focus on the human impact of cooperation in the Nile Basin are particularly welcomed.

Through the Awards therefore, NBI and partners intend to:

  • Give the media an opportunity to showcase their best works that touch on cooperation in transboundary waters in the Nile Basin.
  • Achieve the goal of the Nile Media Awards: to promote increased, factual and balanced reporting on Nile cooperation and Nile Basin issues
  • Recognise and reward excellence in reporting on issues related to Nile Cooperation and the Nile Basin.
  • Inspire journalists in the region to report more on issues surrounding Nile Cooperation and the Nile Basin.
  • Promote investigative journalism and accuracy as well as creativity and innovation in presenting information about key topics to the Basin, including water security, energy security, food security, environment sustainability, climate change adaptation and trans-boundary water governance.

 Eligibility:

  • The Award is open to all practicing journalists including freelancers in the mainstream media and multi-media outlets from the Nile Basin countries, those that NBI has engaged with directly (e.g. through training and other events), as well as all others.
  • The entries should have been published in publications in the 10 NBI Member States namely: Burundi, DR Congo, Egypt, Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, South Sudan, The Sudan, Tanzania and Uganda, between December 2020 and August 22, 2023.

 

Application:

  • Participants must go to the website and click the ‘Submit Entry’ option to apply for the award.
  • No entry fee is required.
  • Awards will be given in the following categories: Print, Radio, Television, Photography, Digital
  • From this pool judges will also select Best female entry & Best  collaborative story.
