Science Initiative Rising Scientist Awards

The crisis in children’s mental health goes many ways, from stigma, to proper attention and slow progress on the science. There is a need to develop new treatments.  Science Initiative Rising Scientist Awards is investing in the scientific leaders of tomorrow will accelerate discovery and transform children’s lives.

Eligibility

  • Interest and achievement in psychology, neuroscience or biomedical engineering research
  • A strong academic performance in science courses
  • Must have participated in related extracurricular activities
  • Must have scientific research studies or independent research in one of the three areas of focus

Benefits

  •  $2,000 scholarship for college expenses
  • An opportunity for the qualified beneficiaries to share their research at the Child Mind Institute’s annual On the Shoulders of Giants Scientific Symposium, attended by world-class scientists (to be held virtually on October 4, 2022)
  • A recognition of awards ceremony following the symposium, the VIP guests, including the Child Mind Institute’s Sarah Gund Distinguished Scientist will be in attendance.
  • The 2022 Distinguished Scientist Awardee is Margaret McCarthy, PhD, Chair, Department of Pharmacology; Director for the Program in Neuroscience (PIN) at the University of Maryland School of Medicine.
  • Invitations to attend a special educational event with representatives from the Child Mind Institute’s research programs and to shadow a Child Mind Institute researcher for a day.
  • Recognition in different media outlets, distributed to national media outlets, on childmind.org and in social media promotion.

Requirement

  • A copy of the student’s transcript is required to be submitted with the nomination form.

Nomination

  • Candidates are nominated in their junior year of high school and winners are celebrated in their senior year. Nominations may only be submitted by school faculty.  Once a nomination has been received, the student will be asked to complete a brief form to collect background information and share at least one work sample. This request will be sent to the student email provided in the nomination form.
