OpenAI Superalignment Fast Grants 2024

Deadline: 18th of February, 2024

OpenAI is a United States-based artificial intelligence (AI) research organization founded in December 2015 with the stated goal of developing “safe and beneficial” artificial general intelligence, which it defines as “highly autonomous systems that outperform humans at most economically valuable work.” It has built multiple huge language models, powerful picture generation models, and earlier, open-source models as one of the main groups of the AI Spring. The publication of ChatGPT is credited with kicking off the artificial intelligence spring.

The organization is made up of the Delaware-based non-profit OpenAI, Inc. and its for-profit subsidiary OpenAI Global, LLC. Ilya Sutskever, Greg Brockman, Trevor Blackwell, Vicki Cheung, Andrej Karpathy, Durk Kingma, Jessica Livingston, John Schulman, Pamela Vagata, Wojciech Zaremba, with Sam Altman and Elon Musk serving as the initial board members. Microsoft provided OpenAI Global LLC with a $1 billion investment in 2019 and a $10 billion investment in 2023, with a significant portion of the investment in the form of compute resources on Microsoft’s Azure cloud service.

As of 2021, OpenAI’s research focused on reinforcement learning (RL). OpenAI is viewed as an important competitor to DeepMind.

OpenAI is launching $10M in grants to support technical research towards the alignment and safety of superhuman AI systems, including weak-to-strong generalization, interpretability, scalable oversight, and more.
