Scholarships

Hamburg University of Applied Sciences (HAW) 2023 – Germany

Deadline: 30th of March, 2023

Scholarships are offered by Hamburg University of Applied Sciences to qualified overseas students pursuing Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. The good news is that, with the exception of professional Master’s programs, Hamburg institutions do not charge tuition to national or foreign students because the City of Hamburg finances degree programs there.

Benefits:

  • Undergraduate: Up to 400 Euros/month (4 months per semester).
  • An application for a further semester is possible.

The scholarship is for one semester; an extension for a further two semesters is possible, if all the courses per semester are completed with a grade average of at least 2.5.

Requirements:

General

  • Candidates must be enrolled as students at the HAW Hamburg
  • Candidates must have completed their school education outside of Germany or have graduated from a Studienkolleg
  • Candidates must not be eligible for BAföG
  • Students in design degree programmes cannot participate in this programme

Applicants must meet the following criteria in order to apply for the scholarship:

  • You are an international bachelor student at the HAW Hamburg.
  • You have already completed at least two semesters at the HAW Hamburg with a grade total of “very good” or “good”.
  • You have completed your school education abroad or have successfully graduated form a Studienkolleg.
  • You are not eligible for a BAföG loan (Federal Training Assistance Act). If you fulfill the criteria for a BAföG loan you are not eligible for the scholarship even if you do not actually receive the funding.
  • Students from the courses Illustration, Communication or Textile Design cannot apply for the scholarship.

Application after the first study year: Applicants from the engineering* courses may apply when their grade is better than 2,9 when they have passed all exams or with a grade better than 2,5 if up to two subjects are missing. Applicants from the non-engineering courses need to have passed all exams so far. Their average grade must be “very good” or “good”.

Documents Required for Application

If you are applying for an excellence scholarship for the first time, you will need letters of recommendation from two instructors in your degree course. Master’s students who have already received an excellence scholarship during their Bachelor studies are also required to submit two current letters of reference. All other students who have already submitted two letters are not required to submit them again.

The following documents must be submitted with every application:

  • CV (max. 2 pages)
  • Certificate of enrolment from myHAW
  • Current transcript from myHAW with information about average grade and completed credit points
  • For students whose average grade and credit points are not listed in their transcript (this currently applies to all degree courses in the Faculty of Engineering and Computer Science, with the exception of Automotive Engineering, Aeronautical Engineering and Mechanical Engineering), the International Office will request the average grade and credit points from the FSB after the application deadline.
  • Copy of your residency permit (non-EU citizens) or a copy of your passport or personal ID card (EU citizens)
  • Bank account information form
  • Financial circumstances form
