The “DLR–DAAD Research Fellowships” program is run by the “German Aerospace Center” (DLR) and the “German Academic Exchange Service” (DAAD). DLR is Germany’s national aeronautics and space research center. Its considerable R&D activity in Aeronautics, Space, Energy, Transportation, Digitalization, and Security is integrated into national and worldwide collaborative initiatives. DLR, Germany’s space agency, has been charged by the German federal government with forwarding planning and execution of the German space program and worldwide advocacy of German interests. DLR’s 55 institutions and facilities in 30 sites in Germany employ over 10,000 employees, including approximately 550 visiting scientists.

  • Doctoral Students (Doctorate in Germany): 1,760euro monthly installment; includes flat-rate travel allowance, health insurance, and family allowances.
  • Postdoctoral Students (Research in Germany): €2,400 per month.
  • Senior Scientists (German Research): 2,760 euros per month.

Financing Duration

  • 1 to 3 months for senior scientists.
  • 6 to 24 months for postdoctoral students.
  • 36 months for doctoral students.

Eligibility Criteria

Requirements for Applications

  • Must not be a citizen of Germany.
  • Be able to demonstrate significant academic or research accomplishments in the field of research relevant to the fellowship offer.
  • Doctoral students: have not more than six years since completing their studies or research with a university degree.
  • Postdoctoral students: Having not more than two years ago completed their studies with a doctorate/Ph.D./Candidate (Russia).
  • Senior Scientists: Must have worked in a higher education institution or research institute.
  • Have a strong command of the English language; understanding German is a plus.

Requirement Documents for Doctoral & Postdoctoral Students

  • Online application form.
  • Abstract of the final Master’s or Ph.D. thesis (max. three pages).
  • List of publications, if applicable.
  • Complete curriculum vitae.
  • University degree certificate indicating final grade(s).
  • English language certificate (e. g. TOEFL IBT: min. 79; IELTS: min. 6.5)
  • German or English translation of documents submitted in the national language.
  • All university certificates on all annual examinations with individual grade(s), incl. Explanation of the grading system.
  • The letter of recommendation form should be created and downloaded in the reference section of the DAAD portal and request by email to be sent in a sealed envelope to the address of the request bin.
  • Cover page.
  • Statement of the reasons for applying for a particular fellowship.

How to Apply?

To register to , you must consider the following steps:

  • Sign up on the DAAD website.
  • Obtain references:
    Referees must prepare and download the form, which is located in the DAAD portal’s “Request reference” section, after registering. kindly ask your referee to complete the form and return it to you in a sealed envelope after sending it to them through email. Please let your referee know the application address in each case so that they can send the letter of reference there directly.
    Note:
  • Only during the application time can a referee form be generated for completion (from about 6 weeks before the application deadline).
  • Create a separate form for every referee.

Submitting an online DAAD application

  • Upload your application materials, then submit them online.
  • Upload the PDF versions of the application form and other supporting papers to the portal. The document published in the original language should be uploaded along with any necessary translations.
  • Get the online application form and finish it.
  • Scan paper documents into PDF format, excluding references. Please be aware that the site only accepts PDF file uploads.
  • Documents should be translated if necessary (unless they are already in German or English).
  • Sending application materials through postal mail:
  • References must be delivered to the application site in the sealed envelope.
