DAAD Short-Term Research Grants 2023-2024 [Fully Funded]

Interested in pursuing graduate-level research in Germany? Applications are currently being accepted by the German Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) for its 2023–2024 Short-Term Research Grants. The DAAD Short-Term Research Grants program’s main objective is to support research initiatives within the framework of doctorate programs.

Who can apply?

Young academics and scientists with a Master’s degree or Diploma, or in rare circumstances, a Bachelor’s degree, at the latest, when they start their grant-supported research, as well as highly qualified doctorate candidates who have already earned a PhD (postdocs).

The application process is not open to doctoral candidates who are completing their whole doctoral program at a German university.

What can be funded?

A research project or course of continuing scientific education being conducted in conjunction with an academic adviser in Germany at a state-funded or state-recognized institution of higher education or non-university research institute.

Duration of the funding:
  • One month to a maximum of six months; the length of the grant is decided by a selection committee and depends on the project in question and the applicant’s work schedule.
  • The grant is non-renewable.

Value:

  • Depending on academic level, monthly payments of
    euros 861.- for graduates,
    euros 1,200.- for doctoral candidates and postdocs
  • Payments towards health, accident and personal liability insurance cover
  • Travel allowance
  • In the case of a disability or chronic illness: subsidy for additional costs which result from the disability or chronic illness and are not covered by other funding providers.

The application procedure occurs online through the DAAD Portal. You can access the DAAD portal by clicking “Application portal” at the end of the page. Here you will find an online application form in which you can enter your application data.

Language skills

  • The required language level depends on the applicant’s study plans and subject: In the arts, social sciences and in law, at least a good knowledge of German is usually expected. For the natural sciences and engineering, proof of good English language skills may also be accepted if English is spoken at the host institute.

Application documents:

  • Certificates, proof of credits, certifications and translations may be scanned in non-certified form and uploaded to the DAAD portal. The DAAD reserves the right to request certified copies of the documents.
