The John F. Richards Fellowship Program 2023 is now accepting applications. For academics working in the area of Afghanistan studies, the American Institute of Afghanistan Studies (AIAS) provides a range of scholarship options.
These grants can be applied to short-term initiatives or other research projects that promote Afghan scholarly study. Through the John F. Richards scholarship program, AIAS bestows a series scholarship each year. The tardy Professor John F. Richards, one of the original members of AIAS and a supporter of academic research on South Asia, is remembered by the Richards Fellowship program.
Research Travel grants and Afghanistan Research Grants are the two divisions of the grants.
Benefits:
- Research Travel Fellowship has a maximum award of $6,000.
- Afghanistan Research Grants has a maximum award of $3,000.
Eligibility:
Research Travel Fellowship
- Open to U.S. Citizens only
- Designed for scholars of all levels
- The award cannot be used for travel to, from or within Afghanistan. It cannot be used for work within the U.S.
Afghanistan Research Grant
- Open to U.S. Citizens, U.S. Permanent Residents, Non-U.S. Citizens with a U.S. Institutional Appointment
- It is designed for Graduate (MA/Doctoral), Post-Doctoral, junior and senior scholars.

- Full CV
- Statement describing the nature of the proposed research or project, including the contribution it will make to Afghan studies,
- double-spaced and not to exceed 1,500 words
- Full budget narrative
- Three letters of recommendation
- Project timetable with research locations
